Night at the Museum

What could be better than mingling with princesses, superheroes and villains against a backdrop of gleaming Hollywood and muscle cars?
How about doing so during a private, after-hours event to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital? Batman will be there. Captain America, too — maybe even a stormtrooper or two. In fact, about 30 costumed characters are expected to dazzle attendees at the third annual Night at the Museum from 7 to 9 p.m. April 29 at the Volo Auto Museum.
“It could be more, you never know,” said Brian Grams, director of the museum at 27582 Volo Village Road. “We’re excited that the Costumers With a Cause are partnering with us again to benefit St. Jude’s.”
In its first two years, Night at the Museum raised more than $5,500, said Chrystine Shelton, lead event organizer for the Midwest Division of Costumers With a Cause.
“One hundred percent of the money raised goes to St. Jude,” Shelton said. “Volo is donating their space. They don’t take anything off the top and we don’t take anything off the top.”
Costumers with a Cause is a volunteer organization with members who create elaborate costumes they wear at children’s charity and other events fostering community growth and unity, according to the group’s Facebook page. Many members are especially excited about the Volo event, as they have a chance to portray characters associated with museum exhibits such as the Batmobile collection, the Star Wars landspeeder display and more, Shelton said.
“For the adults, it’s fun to see the cars,” she said. “But for the kids … they get so excited and happy because to them, you are not just a person in a costume. You are Batman. You are Captain America …
“Honestly, some of the adults get just as excited as the kids. Some of these costumes cost several thousand dollars to create.”
The minimum donation requested to attend Night at the Museum mirrors the museum ticket prices of $15 for adults and $9 for children ages 5 to 12. But more is welcome. The night also will include raffles. For those unable to attend, donations are accepted at
