The McHenry County "Independants," will play an 1858 vintage baseball match against the Chicago Salmon starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, at Algonquin Road Elementary School, 975 Algonquin Road in Fox River Grove.
This type of Civil War-era "base ball" differed radically from today's rules. Players did not use gloves. Leading off from the base and stealing was not allowed. A ball caught on the first bounce was considered an out, and a ball was considered fair or foul based solely on where it first touched the ground.
Everyone is invited to this free event. Bringing a folding chair or blanket to sit on is suggested. Refreshments will be available.
