Discover Engineering Week
Discover Engineering Week, led by industry experts, educators, returns to Hannah Beardsley Middle School.
Discover Engineering Week returns to Hannah Beardsley Middle School January 17-20 where eighth-graders will explore the vast field of engineering. Engineers from major corporations and educators from District 47, District 155 and McHenry County College (MCC) will engage students with presentations and hands-on activities.
Highlights include a visit from a team of engineers from Northrop Grumman, a leading global security company in aerospace and defense. They will share their experiences as engineers and work in the classrooms with teachers as students are presented with a problem-solving project that will require them to use their math, science and communication skills.
Students will also interact with high school seniors from Project Lead the Way, a national program designed to introduce rigorous engineering courses to high school students with the goal of earning first-year engineering college credit at a variety of universities across the country.
Students will rotate classrooms to hear about opportunities for future careers from Baxter & Woodman, a regional civil and environmental engineering firm; General Kinematics, a manufacturing firm headquartered in Crystal Lake; and Rita Corp, a manufacturer and distributor of specialty chemicals to the cosmetic, personal care and industrial markets.
“Several engineers this year are women, letting our girls know that engineering is no longer a male-only career field,” explained Mary Warren, eighth grade science teacher at Hannah Beardsley.
Representatives from District 155 and MCC will present options for a pathway to a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Students will also be participating as engineering design teams and using the Engineering Design Process as they are presented with different challenges in their science classrooms.
