Lighting of the Square
It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
Come out to the beautiful, historic Square on the Friday after Thanksgiving when Christmas officially comes to Woodstock as a flip of the switch illuminates tens of thousands of lights on the Park trees and the Square buildings. While the lighting itself takes place at 7:00PM in the Park-in-the-Square, there are many wonderful holiday activities planned, including holiday carolers, street musicians, holiday sweets and favors, and special goodies and displays in the Square shops and restaurants. Enjoy caroling too, plus Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available in their Square home that evening to greet children and even pose for pictures. A special treat is the opening of the annual Opera House Christmas Tree Walk featuring dozens of trees beautifully decorated by area organizations. Come for the Lighting and then stay for our special shopping and dining. Take a moment to stop by the Old Courthouse for a walk through a candyland of Gingerbread Houses. This display is free to the public and will be available through mid-December.
While you’re in Woodstock for the Lighting, stay for the weekend and enjoy our lovely town Square and brick-lined streets connecting upscale shops, fine dining, and live entertainment. Enjoy holiday shopping on the Square, Route 47, and throughout the City as merchants display their holiday treasures. And don’t forget the many holiday events and performances at the Woodstock Opera House and free carriage rides on selected days.
If you love parades (and who doesn’t!) and are in the holiday spirit, be sure to join in welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus as they join our Christmas Parade around the Square on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. After the Parade, come over to the old fire station behind City Hall and enjoy Cookies and Milk with Santa (and tell him what you want for Christmas!) hosted by the City of Woodstock.
