Halloween Fun Guide


Dearly Departed is the annual re-telling of a real-life story from Crystal Lake’s past and always sells out.

We’ve scared up some fun and frightful Halloween happenings!


September 10-October 30

September 30-October 31

McHenry Area Jaycees Haunted House, Knox Park – Bring a canned food donation for a discount.

October 14-30

Scarytown Scream Park, Plum Tree National, Harvard – A new haunted attraction with Camp Zombie, Deadwoods Haunted Trail and Terror Under the Big Top. Includes a concessions and bar area with scary movies on an outdoor movie screen, a kids’ area with storytelling and min-scare zones.


October 21 & 28

Joe Diamond Paranormal, ‘the Listening Room,’ Crystal Lake – Famed Chicagoland mind reader and magician takes you on a one-hour journey through the unknown.

October 28

free-for-weekender-04Trunk-or-Treat, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake – Pumpkin decorating, face painting, concessions, games, a Bible message and voting for the best decorated trunk.

free-for-weekender-04Annual Halloween Spooktacular!, The Fountains, Crystal Lake –  Children age 12 and younger, with their families, welcome to trick or treat, play games, dance to spooky tunes with a DJ and enjoy refreshments.

October 28-29

Rocky Horror Picture Show, Raue Center, downtown Crystal Lake – Interactive film experience and fundraiser and costume contest.

October 29

HOWL-O-WEEN Bash, Mandalie’s, Algonquin – Halloween-themed fundraiser for A Heart for Animals with costume contest, raffles, photo booth, silent auction, open bar, appetizer buffet and more.

free-for-weekender-04Halloween Walk/Trick-or-Treating, Cary and Fox River Grove – Cary: Jewel Shopping Center (parade will start in front of the former Dunkin Donuts and end at Athletico). FRG: Stone Hill/Foxmoor Crossing (parade will start in front of Leader Ace Hardware and end at Early Learning Center).

Trick-or-Treat Trail, Lions Park, Cary – Games, prizes and more for costumed children.

Fall Fun & Haunted Forest, soccer fields next to Algonquin School Road –  Fall fun games for the littles ones, pumpkin decorating, a costume contest and more.

Halloween Costume Ball, Flores Banquet Hall (former VFW), Woodstock – Part of The Orson Welles Creative Arts Festival. Donations accepted at the door.

Sanfilippo Foundation Halloween Gala – Watch the 1923 silent film, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” accompanied by live music and sound effects played on the estate’s 8,000-pipe Wurlitzer theater organ, then enjoy a Speakeasy Club-themed dinner, carousel rides and live swing band.
“Hotel Transylvania 2″ – Anyone with a costume gets in free or it’s $1 admission, Woodstock Theatre.

Spooky Stories – Three times for different age groups, Read Between the Lynes, Woodstock Square.

October 30

October 31

free-for-weekender-04Trunk-or-Treat, Horse Fair Park, Spring Grove – Trick-or-treating with a tailgating atmosphere.


November 5

free-for-weekender-04Pumpkin Roll & Smash, Lions Park, Cary – Bring your pumpkins and compete with others to see which pumpkin wins the Pumpkin Roll or demolish your pumpkin in the Pumpkin Smash.

Great Pumpkin Roll, Butch Hagele Beach, Lake in the Hills – Experience the crazy fun of rolling a pumpkin down the steep hill at Butch Hagele Beach and watch how far it will go or smash.

Past Events

October 7, 8, 21, 22

Hayrides & Campfire, Hoffman Park, Cary – 45-minute long hayride and s’mores around a campfire.

October 8-22

Haunted Hayride, Petersen Park, McHenry – Fundraiser for local charities. Refreshments available. Free parking.

October 12

Historic Halloween Program, McHenry County Historical Society, Union – Join a shadowy procession through more than one hundred of the exquisite points of Victorian funereal culture. Refreshments in the Society’s West Harmony one-room school afterward.

October 14-15

Maze Til Midnight, Richardson Adventure Farm, Spring Grove – Richardson Farm is one of the few corn mazes open after dark, and the only maze that celebrates the full moon by staying open until midnight on select weekends.

Dearly Departed: A Sweet Demise, Colonel Palmer House, Crystal Lake – Annual re-telling of a real-life story from Crystal Lake’s past. Showtimes are already selling out. Get tickets early.

October 21

free-for-weekender-04Halloween at the Y, Sage YMCA, Crystal Lake – Join us for our haunted trail (and family fun trail), games, crafts, snacks, hot chocolate and more. $0 joiner fee.

October 22

Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade, Ganek Municipal Center, Algonquin – Owners and their dogs are encouraged to come dressed up in their favorite costumes as we parade from the municipal center to High Hill Park.

Halloween Art Party, Creative Arts Inc. Crystal Lake – Draw, paint, sculpt and sew spooky and cute arts and crafts

October 23

Fall Fun on the Square, Huntley – Trick or Treat 5K Trot for Special Olympics, family costume parade, Trinity Lutheran trunk-or-treat, baggo tourney, brat tent, food, entertained, hayrides, games and more.

October 27

Dracula, Woodstock Opera House – Bram Stoker’s gothic masterpiece with renowned storyteller Megan Wells (for young adults and adults).

Murder Mystery, Grand Oaks Recreation Center, Crystal Lake – Clues unfold throughout the evening during this Capone-era Chicago whodunit, dinner included.
