Night Owl Bike Ride

In years past, the Night Owl has been a popular group nighttime ride with up to 500 participants cycling the streets and trails of Crystal Lake. In order to ensure a safe, healthy and fun experience for all, we have re-imagined the Night Owl for 2020 into a series of three self-guided daytime scavenger hunt rides on McHenry County trails during the month of August. Each trail will be marked with QR codes highlighting points of interest and natural landmarks along the route, providing a great way to learn and see more of beautiful McHenry county from a new perspective!

Riders are encouraged to explore each route at their own time and pace throughout the month of August. Try one ride per weekend! Participants who complete all three scavenger hunts by downloading at least five of the QR codes will be entered into a drawing for some fun prizes!

Here is some info on the rides. Want to know more? Detailed maps and info will be provided to registered riders.

  • Urban Adventure: Ride through the city and parks of Crystal Lake (9.6 miles up to 21.5 miles)

  • Country Roads: Ride between MCCD Pleasant Valley (Woodstock), Village of Union, and City of Marengo (12 miles or 20.5 miles)

  • Nature Trails: Ride between MCCD Glacial Park, Village of Richmond, and Village of Hebron (up to 24 miles)

The Night Owl Ride was founded to provide a fun way for residents to experience the feasibility of riding a bicycle as a means of transportation. Proceeds from the ride benefit The Land Conservancy of McHenry County and its efforts to preserve open spaces in our area. Thank you for your support!
